“Greening” our Expo
We’re looking to make this year’s Expo a bit “greener.” We started with online registration, thereby eliminating the paper process. Then we set up shuttle services from airports and hotels for your convenience — think of it as a big carpool to Expo, minimizing Expo’s gasoline imprint. The carpet you will be walking on contains recycled materials, and lunches will be provided with biodegradable, recyclable utensils and serving plates. Soy-based inks and recycled paper are being used in printing Expo materials, and we’re heavily encouraging our instructors to make their presentations available electronically to eliminate paper handouts. Additionally, we established environmental criteria for selecting lodging and the Expo facility itself, including energy-efficient lighting, low-water-flow bathroom fixtures, etc. All your efforts to help make this year’s Expo the “greenest” yet will be greatly appreciated! And please remember to look for special recycle bins for properly disposing of ID badges at the conclusion of Expo 2008!

The USDA BioPreferred Showcase
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be introducing the 2008 BioPreferred Showcase in conjunction with the 2008 GSA Expo in Anaheim, CA.

What is BioPreferred?
BioPreferred is a USDA Preference program that serves to increase the procurement and use of biobased products by federal agencies. Under Section 9002 of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (FSRIA or the 2002 Farm Bill), the USDA has been tasked with spearheading the BioPreferred Program and are doing just that.

BioPreferred products are commercial or industrial products (other than food or feed) composed wholly or in significant part of biological products including renewable agricultural materials (plant, animal, and marine materials) or forestry materials.

This showcase is a resource for producers of biobased products, federal agencies required to purchase them and others interested in renewable products. The showcase will be on the second floor mezzanine level (by the training rooms) on Monday, April 21st 1 p.m. – 4p.m. and again on Tuesday, April 22nd from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Please visit the USDA Web site for more information at http://www.usda.gov/procurement/programs/biobased/showcase/index.html
